Cultivated in Ratnapura, Sri Lanka, this is one of the heaviest teas produced anywhere in the world. This special tea leaf is halfway between a Broken Orange Pekoe and Pekoe. The rich gold color and heavy, nutty flavor, results from the terrain and weather of this region about 100 kilometers south of Colombo.
Black teas, such as Ceylon Ratnapura tea, tend to have a more robust flavor and retain their flavor longer than other teas such as green or white teas. For this reason, compressed bricks of black tea once served as a form of currency in some parts of northeastern Asia as late as the 19th century.
